Michael Sandy is a geologist with over 35 years experience in the resources industry with the past 30 years focused on oil and gas.
Michael’s early career was in minerals exploration before he moved to Papua New Guinea and helped set up the Petroleum Division of the Geological Survey. He subsequently set up a company to manage a team of specialist field geologists. He was Technical Manager of Oil Search Limited and based in Port Moresby for 3 years in the years leading up to the Kutubu oil fields coming on production. In the first half of 1994, Michael took on temporary roles as Oil and Gas Analyst with BZW Australia Limited, and in the second half of that year was involved in establishing Novus Petroleum Ltd and preparing that company for its IPO in April 1995. That equity raising of $168 million is still the largest oil and gas IPO in ASX history.
Over 10 years, Michael held several senior management roles for Novus Petroleum and was a member of the executive committee from inception. He was manager of the company’s assets in the Middle East (Oman, Qatar, Pakistan, Iran, Egypt) and SE Asia (Thailand, Laos, Indonesia, Australia, Philippines) and President of Novus USA based in Houston. He was also Business Development Manager and involved in numerous acquisitions and divestments to a total value of over $500 million. Finally, he co-managed the Novus Petroleum takeover defence effort in 2003/4 when the company was taken over by MedcoEnergi.
For the last 10 years, Michael has been the principal of Sandy Associates (previously MJSA), a group of resources industry consultants. It is active in petroleum, minerals and geothermal projects, and resources industry start-ups. Michael is Chairman of ASX-listed Burleson Energy Limited (BUR) and a director of two private resources focused companies.
Michael brings a wide mix of commercial and technical skills and experience which complement the skills of the other Board members of Tap. In particular, Michael has substantial experience with managing companies of similar size to Tap (including investor relations, business development, asset management, takeover defence), and has maintained good contacts in both the resources and financial markets industries.
